The Dangers of working in and around property where there are ACM (Asbestos Containing Materials) has long been understood, but have you ever wondered how many trades people die each week from asbestos related diseases? 1 or 2 maybe or could it be more? Astonishing as it may seem, statistics indicate that the answer is as high as twenty a week.
Asbestos can be found in walls and ceilings, or in the structure of a building, as well as a lot of other, less obvious places such as floor tiles, boilers, toilet cisterns, guttering and soffits. This has prompted the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to launch a new campaign, aimed at encouraging tradespeople to think about asbestos on every job they do, and raising awareness. A survey, undertaken by Censuswide in September, showed that whilst many of those surveyed, including many of the trades people effected, could identify some areas where asbestos might be present, however, others were clueless. And perhaps more alarming was the fact that many of those involved in the survey (27%) believed that opening a window would help protect them from danger and 14% believing that drinking a glass of water or milk would also protect them.
