Our IOSH Managing Safely Course develops an in-depth understanding of the legal, moral and social duties of sector supervisors, managers, directors and business owners. It also provides clear guidance on how to control their workforce in accordance with current health & safety regulations and best practice.
This course will also give individuals and organisations peace of mind from training that's flexible, efficient and effective. Memorable and thought-provoking facts and case studies from across the globe help drive the points home over the whole course. Each module is backed by crystal-clear examples and recognisable scenarios, and summaries reinforce the key learning points.
This course consists of several training room lectures and presentation, a multiple-choice theory assessment, and an out-of-classroom assessed project.

The IOSH Managing Safely course is ideal for managers and supervisors in any sector, and any organisation worldwide. They won’t suddenly become safety experts – but they’ll get up-to-speed on the practical actions they need to take and gain the knowledge and tools to tackle the safety and health issues they’re responsible for. Importantly, Managing Safely makes a powerful case for safety and health being an integral part of day-to-day management and business.
Delegates should:
- Have a good understanding of written & spoken English. If delegates have any problems with English literacy or language comprehension, they must bring them to the attention of their employer.
- Be able to commit and dedicate their spare time to study outside of the classroom.
The agenda for the IOSH Managing Safely Course includes:
1. Introducing Managing Safely
Some managers may see health and safety as an add-on to their role – even an intrusion. The first module makes it clear that managers are accountable for their teams and makes a persuasive case for managing safely.
2. Assessing Risks
This module defines and demystifies ‘risk’ and ‘risk assessment’. Risk assessments and a simple scoring system are introduced, and delegates carry out a series of assessments.
3. Controlling Risks
Here the session tackles cutting risks down, concentrating on the best techniques to control key risks, and how to choose the right method.
4. Understanding Responsibilities
This module looks at the demands of the law and how the legal system works and introduces a health and safety management system.
5. Understanding Hazards
All the main issues any operation must deal with are covered in this module – entrances and exits, work traffic, fire, chemicals, electricity, physical and verbal abuse, bullying, stress, noise, housekeeping and the working environment, slips, trips and falls, working at height, computers and manual handling.
6. Investigating Incidents
The session starts with why accidents should be investigated, and goes on to cover why things go wrong, and how to carry out an investigation when they do.
7. Measuring Performance
This module explains how checking performance can help to improve health and safety. Delegates learn how to develop basic performance indicators and get to grips with auditing and proactive and reactive measuring.
8. Protecting Our Environment
A short but effective introduction to waste and pollution leads into a look at how organisations and individual managers can get involved in cutting down environmental impacts.
9. Theory Assessment
Multiple choice examination in which candidates must demonstrate what they have learnt throughout the duration of the course.
10. Out-Of-Classroom Project: Conducting a Work-Based Risk Assessment
After the classroom portion of the has finished, delegates are required take an assessed project home with them in which participants must show how to apply the knowledge they have gained throughout the course to real life situations. Delegates will need to complete and return within two weeks of the course end date.
Successful delegates will receive a physical IOSH Managing Safely certificate accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). There is no expiry date on the certificate – however, IOSH do recommend that delegates refresh their qualification every 3 years to ensure their knowledge is kept up to date and relevant.
The natural progression from the IOSH Managing Safely course is the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Course.
