Course Overview

The IPAF Safety Harness use & Inspection Course delivers a minimum of 4 hours instruction and is designed to instruct up to a maximum ratio of 10 delegates per instructor, providing training to safely use harnesses and lanyards when using a range of MEWPS (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms). It also covers skills such as the selection and pre-inspection of the equipment.

The IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) certification is an internationally recognised qualification for use of such machinery. More than 100,000 operators are trained each year through a worldwide network of training centers. As an approved training center, we are audited by IPAF annually. Training generally lasts one to two days and is a mixture of theory and practice.

This course consists of an instructor led training room presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

The course is aimed at individuals that use, supervise or manage the use of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPS) and need to be made aware of the correct selection, inspection and use of safety harnesses to prevent falls. Please note that this course does not deem delegates as competent persons for the purposes of formal periodic inspections of FPE. Please see our Safety Harness Inspection Course for more details.

Delegates should be physically fit and in good health and should, generally, not have problems with eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, fear of heights, vertigo, giddiness, difficulty with balance, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness.

If you have any problems with literacy or language comprehension, or have any doubts about your fitness to use an MEWP, you must bring them to the attention of your employer. This need not preclude you from using MEWPs, provided your employer conducts an assessment and is able to put into place adequate measures, to take account of any difficulties you may have.

Those who successfully complete both the theory and practical sessions will receive an IPAF Certificate that is valid for a period of 5 years. Those who have already successfully completed an IPAF Operator Course will have the Harness category (H) added to the PAL Card. Those who do not have a current licence will receive the certificate only.

Successful delegates will gain an understanding of the correct selection and pre-use inspection of safety harnesses and lanyards used for restraint on a MEWPs. The course agenda includes:

  • Legislation, Standards, CE Markings and Guidance
  • Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment
  • Hierarchy of Fall Protection Measures
  • IPAF Harness Statement
  • Harness, Lanyard and Fittings
  • Pre-Use Checks and Correct Usage (inc Practical)
  • Usage and Anchor Points
  • Harness Storage and Maintenance
  • Hazards and Precautions
  • Rescue Requirements and Options
  • Theory Test
