Most workplace first aid qualifications are valid for three years, including First Aid at Work (FAW) and Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW).
Before a certificate expires, first aiders should complete the appropriate requalification or training if they are to remain certified. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) also strongly recommends annual refresher training to help first aiders maintain their knowledge and practical skills.
This is particularly important because skills such as CPR, using an automated external defibrillator (AED), controlling serious bleeding and responding to choking may not be used regularly. A certificate may last three years, but confidence and practical ability can begin to fade much sooner.
The appropriate first aid qualification depends on your workplace, workforce and the hazards employees may encounter. Employers should determine the level of provision required through a first aid needs assessment.
As a general guide, Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) may be suitable for some lower-risk workplaces, while First Aid at Work (FAW) provides more extensive training for workplaces requiring a greater level of first aid provision.
Some workplaces may also require more specialist first aid training depending on their activities and the people for whom they are responsible.
If you're unsure which qualification your organisation needs, Kentec Training can help identify suitable training based on your workplace and first aid requirements.
Although FAW and EFAW certificates are normally valid for three years, HSE strongly recommends annual refresher training during this period.
Refresher training allows first aiders to revisit essential practical skills before they become rusty, which can be particularly valuable for somebody who hasn't needed to use their training since completing their qualification.
The aim is simple: if an emergency happens, a first aider should be able to respond confidently rather than trying to remember training completed several years earlier.
Many recognised workplace first aid qualifications are valid for three years, although not every first aid qualification has the same validity or renewal requirements.

Specialist qualifications can have different requirements, so always check the certificate, awarding organisation or training provider if you're unsure.
Employers should plan appropriate training before certificates expire to prevent unnecessary gaps in workplace first aid provision.
First aid is a practical skill, and somebody may go several years without needing to perform CPR, control serious bleeding or respond to a choking casualty. Without regular practice, these skills can become harder to recall under pressure.
Guidance and recognised best practice can also develop over time. Requalification provides an opportunity to practise essential skills, reinforce existing knowledge and learn about relevant changes.
Put simply, confidence and competence can decline much faster than a certificate expires.
Once a workplace first aid qualification has expired, the individual should not continue to be treated as holding a current first aid qualification until the appropriate training has been completed.
For employers, this can create a problem if an expired certificate leaves the organisation without the level of first aid provision identified through its first aid needs assessment.
Maintaining a record of qualified first aiders and their certificate expiry dates makes this easier to manage. Requalification should ideally be arranged well in advance, providing flexibility for course availability, annual leave or unexpected absence.
Employers should also review their first aid needs assessment when circumstances change, including workforce numbers, shift patterns, locations or workplace risks.
A first aid certificate shouldn't simply be something that is renewed every three years and forgotten about in between.
Jason Whybrow, Instructor Standards & Quality Manager, and Senior First Aid Instructor at Kentec Training, explains:
“Good first aid relies on confidence as much as knowledge. The best outcome is that delegates never have to use their training, but if they do, they need to be ready.
Ultimately, first aid training isn't simply about holding a valid certificate. It's about ensuring that when somebody becomes seriously ill or injured, there is someone nearby with the knowledge, practical ability and confidence to help.”
