Our Portable Powertools and Abrasive Wheel Safety training course is a full day course delivering a minimum of 6 hours of classroom based theory and non-live practical instruction and assessment for the more experienced portable power tool and abrasive wheel machine operators.
The course will enable delegates to work safely, provide an understanding of current legislation and promote awareness of the dangers and hazards of portable power tools and abrasive wheels, offering practical steps to reduce workplace accidents and encourage workers to adopt a culture that results in a safer workplace.
This course consists of a training room lecture, presentation, written assessment, non-live practical training and assessment.
Our Portable Powertools and Abrasive Wheels Safety course is intended for those who operate, supervise or manage the use of portable power tools and abrasive wheels on angle grinders, cut off saws and bench top cut off saws.
There are no prerequisites for this course, although an understanding of portable power tools and abrasive wheels and the use of angle grinders, cut off saws and bench top cut off saws would be an advantage.
Since the safe use of powertools and abrasive wheels require that delegates consult safety notices and read and thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s instruction manual, English literacy and language comprehension at CEFR Levels C1/C2 are important requirements for any user.
The agenda for the Portable Powertools and Abrasive Wheels Safety course includes:
- An overview of Health and Safety Legislation inc HASWA 99, PUWER 98, MHSWR 99, PPER 92
- The Hazards, Risks and Risk Control Measures including Contact, Wheel Burst, Noise, Respiratory and HAVS Hazards
- The recommended Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- The types of Portable Powertools and Abrasive Wheel Machines and their safe use.
- Resin Bonded Abrasive Wheel Selection, Identification and Inspection – Types 27, 41 & 42 (Non-Live Practical Exercise)
- The correct use, setting, adjustment and inspection of flanges, guards and accessories
- Correct Pre-Use Machine Safety Checks (Non-Live Practical Exercise)
- How to Mount of Abrasive Wheels on Angle Grinders, Chop Saws and Disc Cutters (Non-Live Practical Exercise)
Successful delegates will receive a Portable Powertools and Abrasive Wheel Safety e-certification accredited by Kentec Training valid for a period of 3 years from the date of the course.

While there is a practical element of this course, in which delegates will handle and inspect a wide range of portable powertools, please note that there is no live practical on this course in which the powertool is utilised. For onsite courses, a live practical session is only available if all safety measures are in place at the site. It is ultimately down to the instructor's discretion if these measures are met.
No. As this is a classroom-based course, you are not required to bring any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). For certain training sessions, temporary equipment such as safety harnesses may be provided if required.
