Course Overview

Our First Aid at Work Course delivers a minimum of 18 hours of classroom based theory and practical instruction and is designed to instruct up to a maximum of 12 delegates.

This Regulated Qualification is ideal for anyone wishing to become an first aider. In work environments where there are more significant health and safety risks, it is more likely that a trained first aider will be required. The HSE cannot tell employers what provision is required for first aid, as the nature of businesses and organisations is so different. First aid provision must be 'adequate and appropriate in the circumstances', meaning employers must provide sufficient equipment, facilities and personnel at all times.

Throughout the duration of the course, delegates will be assessed when carrying out a number of practical exercises including CPR, use of an AED, unconscious casualties, wounds, bleeding and shock, secondary surveys and management of fractures.

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

This course is aimed at personnel who are or will be appointed as an first aider in the workplace and need to develop the skills and knowledge needed to take on that role. It is intended for those who will have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide basic first aid to people in a range of first aid situations.

Please note that learners will be expected to take part in exercises such as CPR and AED use, so please ensure delegates are in good health and do not have anything that may preclude them from taking part in the practical assessment. Delegate must be at least 16 years old to attend this course and it is advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in Literacy or Numeracy, or equivalent due to the multiple choice examination at the end of the course.

Successful delegates will receive a QualSafe e-certificate which will be valid for a period of 3 years from the date of the course. They will also gain an understanding of the practical administration of safe, prompt and effective first aid in the workplace with an understanding of the role of first aider in line with current legislation and recommendations from the Resuscitation Council (UK).

    • Demonstrate how to apply a support sling an an elevated sling
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
    • Recognise a suspected head injury and spinal injury
    • Identify how to administer first aid for suspected head injury
    • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for suspected spinal injury
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injuries
    • Recognise a suspected flail chest and penetrating chest injury
    • Identify how to administer first aid for a flail chest and penetrating chest injury
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds
    • Identify the factors that affect the severity of burns and scalds
    • Identify how to administer first aid for burns involving dry heat, wet heat, electricity and chemicals
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with an eye injury
    • Identify how to administer first aid for eye injuries involving dust, chemicals and embedded objects
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning
    • Identify the routes that poisons can take to enter the body
    • Identify how to administer immediate first aid to a casualty affected by sudden poisoning
    • Identify sources of information for treating those affected by sudden poisoning
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis
    • Identify common triggers for anaphylaxis
    • Recognise suspected anaphylaxis
    • Identify how to administer first aid for a casualty suffering from anaphylaxis
