Qualitative Face Fit Testing Service

Qualitative Face Fit Testing ServiceKentec Training provide a qualitative face fit testing service for your employees with a fully trained and accredited fit2fit assessor delivering the service.

If you provide respiratory protective equipment (RPE) to your employees then it is essential that you have documentary evidence to show the RPE fits the wearer.

By subjecting each wearer to a face-fit test you can be sure that your organisation is fulfilling the requirements laid out in the Health & Safety Executives (HSE) guidance note HSE 282/28 and the statutory duties placed upon you under regulations such as the COSHH Regulations 2002.

Kentec’s face fit assessors have all successfully completed the  ‘fit2fit‘ RPE Fit Test Providers Accreditation Scheme assessment and can now carry out Face Fitting for wearers of tight fitting respirators and dust masks.

Up until recently, fit testers of RPE have not been accredited, making the selection of a competent person a matter of luck and guess work. The wearer of the equipment will be risking potential respiratory health problems if the RPE supplied is ill fitting.

Recent research indicates that as much as 50% of all Personal Respiratory Protection Equipment (PRPE) used does not offer the wearer the level of protection assumed and one of the major reasons is that it simply does not fit the users face correctly! Yet, under the regulations RPE must be correctly selected and this includes, for many types of RPE, a Face Piece Fit Test conducted by a trained and competent person.

Why Perform an Qualitative Face Fitting Test?

If you provide respiratory protective equipment (RPE) to your employees then it is essential that you have documentary evidence to show the RPE fits the wearer.

By subjecting each wearer to an RPE face fitting test you can be sure that your organisation is meeting and fulfilling the requirements laid out in the Health & Safety Executives (HSE) guidance note HSE 282/28.

The COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations include a requirement that the initial selection process for all tight-fitting face pieces should include face-fit testing to ensure the wearer has a correctly fitting device.  Face-Fit Testing is also required under both the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 AcoP L143 (paragraph 196) and the Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002 ACoP L132 (paragraph 133).

The test process may include some training and is specific to each person and includes:

  • How to check the mask is working properly before use
  • How to identify worn or broken parts Qualitative Face Fitting Service
  • How to check the mask still fits
  • Limitations of the mask to be used

What Types of Mask Requires Qualitative Face Fitting Test?

RPE Fit Testing is required for all tight-fitting face pieces including all filtering face pieces (disposable face masks), half masks and full-face masks.

This includes negative pressure full-face masks as well as power-assisted full masks, and both self-contained and air-fed breathing apparatus. There are two types of fit tests available – Qualitative & Quantitative.

The type of fit test which should be employed is dependant on the face piece being tested. As a rule, Filter Face Pieces (FFP) & Half Masks can be tested using a Qualitative method, all other tight fitting face-pieces must use a Quantitative test method.

The test we are offering here is the Qualitative

When Should Qualitative Face Fit Testing be Carried Out?

A Fit Test can be carried out in the initial stages of selecting RPE, where an untested face piece is already in use or when the wearer has any significant facial changes (i.e. weight gain or loss, facial hair growth, etc).
Fit testing does not need to be done annually but it is recommended that face piece wearers receive annual refresher training covering the selection, use & maintenance of their face mask. When face pieces are issued on an individual basis, it is recommended that they receive an individual assessment on their own face piece (mask).
Please note that in order for the face fit tests to work, those attending a face fit session MUST NOT eat, drink or chew gum for at least 15 minutes and not smoke for at least an hour before the test is performed.
They must also be clean-shaven as stubble will prevent a good seal and the face fit test may fail. Failure to adopt this requirement will result in the person NOT being tested.
