The IOSH Managing Safely Course delivers a minimum of 24 hours of face-to-face instruction over three days to develop each delegate's understanding of legal, moral and social duties of sector supervisors, managers, directors and business owners. This course provides guidance on how to control their workforce in accordance with current health & safety regulations and best practice.
You’ll find a practical programme, full of step-by-step guidance, and with a sharp business focus. But you’ll also find that the highly innovative format and content engages and inspires candidates – critical to getting essential health and safety messages across.
This course will give organisations a peace of mind from training that's flexible, efficient and effective. Memorable and thought-provoking facts and case studies from across the globe help drive the points home over the whole course. Each module is backed by crystal-clear examples and recognisable scenarios, and summaries reinforce the key learning points.
Throughout the course, delegates will take a mock assessment to prepare for the written test at the end of the three day course. After the classroom portion of the has finished, delegates are required take a project home with them that they will need to complete and return within two weeks of the course end date.

The IOSH Managing Safely Course is designed for managers and supervisors in any sector, and any organisation worldwide. They won’t suddenly become safety experts – but they’ll get up-to-speed on the practical actions they need to take, and gain the knowledge and tools to tackle the safety and health issues they’re responsible for. Importantly, Managing Safely makes a powerful case for safety and health being an integral part of day-to-day management and business.
Since the IOSH Managing Safely Course requires that delegates read and thoroughly understand course notes and instructions, literacy and language comprehension are an important requirement.
If delegates have any problems with literacy or language comprehension, they must bring them to the attention of their employer.
The agenda for the IOSH Managing Safely Course includes:
1. Introducing Managing Safely
Some managers may see health and safety as an add-on to their role – even an intrusion. The first module makes it clear that managers are accountable for their teams, and makes a persuasive case for managing safely.
2. Assessing Risks
This module defines and demystifies ‘risk’ and ‘risk assessment’. Risk assessments and a simple scoring system are introduced, and delegates carry out a series of assessments.
3. Controlling Risks
Here the session tackles cutting risks down, concentrating on the best techniques to control key risks, and how to choose the right method.
4. Understanding Your Responsibilities
This module looks at the demands of the law and how the legal system works, and introduces a health and safety management system.
5. Identifying Hazards
All the main issues any operation has to deal with are covered in this module – entrances and exits, work traffic, fire, chemicals, electricity, physical and verbal abuse, bullying, stress, noise, housekeeping and the working environment, slips, trips and falls, working at height, computers and manual handling.
6. Investigating Accidents and Incidents
The session starts with why accidents should be investigated, and goes on to cover why things go wrong, and how to carry out an investigation when they do.
7. Measuring Performance
This module explains how checking performance can help to improve health and safety. Delegates learn how to develop basic performance indicators, and get to grips with auditing and proactive and reactive measuring.
8. Protecting Our Environment
A short but effective introduction to waste and pollution leads into a look at how organisations and individual managers can get involved in cutting down environmental impacts.
Successful delegates will receive a physical IOSH Managing Safely Certificate. There is no expiry date on the certificate, IOSH recommend that delegates refresh their course every 3 years to keep their knowledge up to date.

No. As this is a classroom-based course, you are not required to bring any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). For certain training sessions, temporary equipment such as safety harnesses may be provided if required.
No, delegates are not required to purchase IOSH membership in order to attend one of our IOSH courses. Nor will completing an IOSH accredited course award delegates with IOSH Membership.
Yes, we can absolutely offer you support. We understand that everyone learns differently, and we’re committed to making our courses accessible to all. Our instructors are experienced in delivering training to individuals with varying levels of reading and writing ability.
We can offer additional verbal guidance, practical demonstrations, and one-to-one support when attending training courses at one of our training centres. If required, we can also arrange for assistance during written assessments, such as a reader.

‘Block Release’ courses are attended consecutively over sequential days, allowing you to complete the training quickly in a more intense, focused "block" of training. Whereas ‘Day Release’ courses typically run one or two days per week with ample space in-between each session, making it easier to balance your training alongside work and other commitments. Regardless of your chosen learning method, both formats cover the same content and lead to the same qualification.
