Course Overview

Our L.A Ladder & Stepladder Combined User & Inspection Training Course delivers a minimum of 7 hours of instruction and is designed to instruct up to a maximum of 8 delegates, providing training for users, supervisors and managers wanting to equip themselves with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to use and formally inspect ladders and step ladders legally and safely.

Written with the guidance from the UK's leading experts on ladder manufacture, maintenance and safety, the Ladder Association scheme addresses all the issues raised by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and, more recently, the Work and Height Regulations 2005.

Under the regulations every person in the chain leading up to, and including, the final user, has a duty of care to both themselves and others to know and understand the practical implications of working safety at height. Demonstration of competence is a key requirement of the new regulations and successful completion of the L.A Ladder and Step Ladder Training Course provides proof of such competence.

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

This course is aimed at personnel who are or will be responsible for use and formal inspection of Ladders and Step Ladders in the work place. There are no prerequisites required for this course although a working knowledge of ladders is an advantage.

Since the safe use of ladders and step ladders requires that delegates consult safety notices and read and thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s instruction manual, English literacy and language comprehension are important requirements for any ladder user. In addition, delegates should be fit and capable of lifting and carrying ladders and step ladders.

Please note that delegates will be expected to work at height whilst climbing a ladder for the practical, so please ensure delegates are in good health and do not have a fear of heights that may preclude them from taking part in the practical assessment.

Successful delegates will receive a Ladder Association Ladder & Step Ladder Users & Inspection e-certification valid for a period of 5 years from the date of the course. They will gain an understanding of current relevant legislation and best practice on a range of ladders and step ladders, be able to utilise them safely and in-line with current approved methods and manufacturer’s instructions, and be able to carry out both pre-use S.T.E.P inspections and formal inspections of Ladders & Step Ladders.

The agenda for the L.A Ladder & Stepladder Combined User & Inspection course includes:

  • Legislation and Regulations affecting Work at Height
  • Requirements for the use of Ladders and Step Ladders
  • Product standards and classifications for Ladders and Step Ladders in the workplace
  • Hazards affecting the use of Ladders and Step Ladders
  • The need to planning using the S.T.E.P format
    • Site
    • Task
    • Equipment
    • Personnel
  • Operator’s Pre-Use and Step Ladder Inspection
  • Correct Storage and Transport of Ladders

This course also aims to provide a nationally recognised inspection qualification for ladders and stepladders enabling users to:

  • Accurately record details of ladders
  • Identify component parts using industry standard naming conventions
  • Thoroughly inspect ladders and stepladders, and identify safety critical faults
  • Record your findings in accordance with statutory requirements (as outlined in PUWER ACOPs 163)
  • Recommend action to be taken if faults found
