Course Overview

Our L.A Stepladder and Stools for Users training course is suitable for users of stepladders and step stools in places like shops, offices, schools, libraries and the healthcare sector. The Ladder Association Stepladder and Step Stools for Users Course delivers a minimum of 4 hours of instruction and is designed to instruct up to a maximum of 8 delegates, providing training for infrequent users wanting to equip themselves with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to use step ladders and step stools legally and safely.

Written with the guidance from the UK's leading experts on ladder manufacture, maintenance and safety, the Ladder Association scheme addresses all the issues raised by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and, more recently, the Work and Height Regulations 2005.

Under the regulations every person in the chain leading up to, and including, the final user, has a duty of care to both themselves and others to know and understand the practical implications of working safety at height. Demonstration of competence is a key requirement of the new regulations and successful completion of the L.A Stepladder and Stools Training Course provides proof of such competence.

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

This course is aimed at personnel who are or will be responsible for use of stepladders and stools in the work place. There are no prerequisites required for this course although a working knowledge of ladders is an advantage.

Since the safe use of step ladders and stools requires that delegates consult safety notices and read and thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s instruction manual, English literacy and language comprehension are important requirements for any ladder user. In addition, delegates should be fit and capable of lifting and carrying ladders and step ladders.

Please note that delegates will be expected to work at height whilst climbing a stepladder for the practical, so please ensure delegates are in good health and do not have a fear of heights that may preclude them from taking part in the practical assessment.

Successful delegates will receive a Ladder Association Step Ladder & Step Stools for Users e-certification valid for a period of 5 years from the date of the course. They will gain an understanding of current relevant legislation and best practice on a range of step ladders and step stools and be able to carry out a visual pre-use inspection as well as utilise them safely and in-line with current approved methods and manufacturer’s instructions.

The agenda for the L.A Stepladder and Stools for Users course includes:

  • Assess and determine when it's appropriate to use stepladders & step stools.
  • Correctly locate and safely use stepladders & step stools.
  • Visually inspect stepladders and step stools for damage before and after use
  • Understand the law and standards relating to stepladders & step stools.
  • Identify hazards in the use of stepladders & step stools.
  • Identify correct storage & handling methods of stepladders and step stools.
