Course Overview

Our QA Principles of COSHH Course delivers a minimum of 4 hours of instruction and is designed to develop the understanding of the law relating to hazardous substances in the workplace, how risk assessments contribute to the safe use of hazardous substances in the workplace and the precautions and procedures necessary to ensure the risks associated with hazardous substances are properly controlled.

Throughout the duration of the course, delegates will be assessed when carrying out a number of practical exercises. At the end of the course delegates will take a multiple choice test.

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation and written assessment.

This course is suitable for anyone in an organisation who require to develop their knowledge of COSHH regulations and requirements. In addition, it is suitable for those who intend to work in an environment where it's likely they will be coming into contact with hazardous substances. This includes workplaces such as healthcare, manufacturing, cleaning, transport, utilities and office environments.

Delegates must be at least 16 years old to attend this course and it is advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in Literacy or Numeracy, or equivalent due to the multiple choice examination at the end of the course.

Successful delegates will receive a Qualsafe e-certificate which will be valid for a period of 3 years from the date of the course. They will gain an understanding of the knowledge, skills and understanding required when working with hazardous substances and how to deal with them safely and effectively.

The agenda for the QA Principles of COSHH (RQF) Course includes:

1. Understand the law relating to hazardous substances in the workplace:

  • Outline employers and employees duties relating to hazards substances at work
  • Outline the consequences for non-compliance with statutory duties
  • List the ways in which an employer can communicate hazardous substances safety information

2. Understand how risk assessments contribute to the safe use of hazardous substances in the workplace:

  • Define the terms hazard and risk with respect to hazardous substances
  • List the different forms that hazardous substances can take
  • Outline the health and safety effects that may arise following exposure or release of hazardous substances
  • Outline the routes that hazardous substances can enter the body
  • Describe how risk assessments reduce accidents and ill health at work
  • Outline the five step process of risk assessment

3. Understand the precautions and procedures necessary to ensure the risks associated with hazardous substances are properly controlled:

  • Outline the control hierarchy in respect of safe use, handling, transporting, storage and disposal of substances hazardous to health.
  • Outline the types of information that should be referred to for the safe identification and use of hazardous substances.
  • Describe the general procedures that should be in place for dealing with an incident involving hazardous substances.
