Course Overview

Our L.A Ladder & Stepladder Inspection Course delivers a minimum of 4 hours of instruction and is designed to instruct up to a maximum of 8 delegates, providing training for users, supervisors and managers wanting to equip themselves with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to formally inspect ladders and step ladders legally and safely. Written with the guidance from the UK's leading experts on ladder manufacture, maintenance and safety, the Ladder Association scheme addresses all the issues raised by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and, more recently, the Work and Height Regulations 2005.

Under the regulations every person in the chain leading up to, and including, the final user, has a duty of care to both themselves and others to know and understand the practical implications of working safety at height. Demonstration of competence is a key requirement of the new regulations and successful completion of the L.A Ladder & Stepladder Inspection Training Course provides proof of such competence.

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

This course is aimed at personnel who are or will be responsible for the formal inspection of Ladders and Step Ladders in the work place. Delegates are required to attend and successfully pass the LA Ladder & Step Ladder User Course prior to attending the Inspection Course.

Since the safe use of ladders and step ladders requires that delegates consult safety notices and read and thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s instruction manual, English literacy and language comprehension are important requirements for any ladder user. In addition, delegates should be fit and capable of lifting and carrying ladders and step ladders.

Please note that delegates will be expected to work at height whilst climbing a ladder for the practical, so please ensure delegates are in good health and do not have a fear of heights that may preclude them from taking part in the practical assessment.

Successful delegates will gain an understanding of current relevant legislation and best practice on a range of ladders and step ladders and be able to carry out a formal inspection, create and maintain inspection records in line with current approved methods and manufacturer’s instructions.

At the end of the theory session, delegates will take a short multiple choice test. If delegates successfully pass the test, they will then move onto the practical assessment, where they will have to carry out a fault finding exercise, carry, position and climb a ladder and step ladder.

Successful delegates will receive a certificate and Photo ID card which will be valid for a period of 5 years from the date of the course.

The course agenda includes:

  • Accurately record details of ladders
  • Identify component parts using industry standard naming conventions
  • Thoroughly inspect ladders and stepladders, and identify safety critical faults
  • Record your findings in accordance with statutory requirements (as outlined in PUWER ACOPs 163)
  • Recommend action to be taken if faults found

Also have an understanding of:

  • The relevant legislation and guidance and approved code of practice (ACOPs) governing the inspection of ladders and stepladders
  • The difference between pre-use and formal inspections
  • Common manufacturing processes used, and their implications for the cost-effectiveness of repairs
  • The difference between maintenance and repairs and who is allowed to do them
  • The correct methods of disposal of equipment at the end of its working life
