Course Overview

Our NPORS Slinger / Signaller Novice Course delivers a minimum of 2 days of instruction depending on the experience of the delegates, up to a maximum of 3 delegates per instructor. This course will provide the delegates with an understanding of their industry, their responsibilities as trained operative and will enable them to prepare, secure, balance and guide loads of varying weight safely, efficiently, and in-line with manufacturers requirements and the relevant UK regulations and legislation.

In order to attend this course, you must hold a valid UK Passport or Driving Licence. This will need to be presented to the instructor on the day. This is a requirement of NPORS.

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

This course is aimed at those who wish to conduct slinger & signaller duties and do not have experience with the machinery.

Since the operation and inspection of this machinery can be physically demanding, delegates must be fit and able to carry out the tasks required in the course program. A good understanding of spoken and written English is required.

Successful delegates will receive an NPORS Slinger / Signaller Operators Card, which is valid for 3-5 years, depending on the chosen certification route.

By the end of the course, the delegates will be able to answer questions on and perform the following:

  • Their industry, the dangers of working in the industry and responsibilities as an slinger/signaller
  • A working knowledge LOLER, PUWER and other lifting related regulations for the particular use of lifting equipment and accessories to be used
  • Be able to locate, identify and explain different types of lifting equipment and accessories. Explain their basic construction, uses, applications and their functions
  • Interpreting and extracting information on all relevant documentation
  • Undertake all pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identify non-serviceable items
  • Explain procedures for placing non-serviceable items out of service
  • Identify and explain centres of gravity and calculate estimated weights of loads
  • How to set up exclusion zones, explaining actions required for emergency actions, identifying any overhead hazards
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for slinger/signaller use
  • Securing various types of loads to a hook using the relevant
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
  • Operate as a slinger/signaller safely and efficiently
  • Be able to establish effective communication methods
  • Environmental considerations
  • Carry out all end of shift checks and storage of accessories
