Course Overview

Our UKATA Certified Asbestos Awareness Course delivers a minimum of 4 hours of learning time and is designed to instruct up to a maximum of 12 delegates, providing training for those who need a basic understanding of asbestos and its potential risks. Asbestos is responsible for approximately 4500 deaths every year.

Asbestos was commonly used in building materials until 1999 where the UK Government banned the use of all asbestos containing materials (ACMs). As a result, it is still possible for individuals to come into contact with asbestos, and repeated exposure can lead to asbestos related diseases such as mesothelioma or lung cancer.

Delegates who are responsible for the repair and maintenance of commercial property will be able to identify and deal with asbestos, and meet their legal ‘duty to manage’. Exemption from this requirement for training, only applies when it can be demonstrated that the working environment is free from all asbestos-containing materials (ACM’s.)

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

This course is aimed at employees who are, or could be liable to be exposed to asbestos, or those who supervise such employees. The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires thatevery employer to ensure that adequate information, instruction and training is given to their employees - even if you have no intention of removing asbestos, work on buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000 could have asbestos present, and awareness training is required.

In particular, it should be given to those workers in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades where it is foreseeable that ACMs may become exposed during their work. This course is suitable for those in the following industries, but are not limited to: demolition workers, construction workers, general maintenance staff, electricians, plumbers, roofers, heating and ventilation engineers and other such professionals.

This requirement does not apply where the employer can demonstrate that work will only be carried out in or on premises free of ACMs.

Successful delegates will receive a UKATA e-Certificate which will be valid for 1 year.

The certification can then be validated using UKATA's online validation tool to ensure your delegates have legitimate certification. Certification will be provided for those who have successfully passed the multiple choice examination at the end of the theory session. All delegates are required to attain a grade of at least 80%.

The agenda for the UKATA Asbestos Awareness course includes:

  • Outline the different types and properties of asbestos
  • Risks to and effects of health caused by exposure to asbestos and the increased risks from smoking
  • Explain where asbestos can typically be found within buildings
  • Outline the main reasons why asbestos was used: - coatings, insulation, asbestos insulting board, cement and other ACMs
  • Avoiding the risks from asbestos and demonstrate an awareness of how they would find information about the presence of asbestos before starting work
  • General emergency arrangements if asbestos is discovered
