Course Overview

Our UKATA Certified Asbestos Awareness Course delivers a minimum of 4 hours of learning time and is designed to instruct up to a maximum of 12 delegates, providing training for those who need a basic understanding of asbestos and its potential risks. Asbestos is responsible for approximately 4500 deaths every year. Asbestos was commonly used in building materials until 1999 where the UK Government banned the use of all asbestos containing materials (ACMs). As a result, it is still possible for individuals to come into contact with asbestos, and repeated exposure can lead to asbestos related diseases such as mesothelioma or lung cancer.

Delegates who are responsible for the repair and maintenance of commercial property will be able to identify and deal with asbestos, and meet their legal ‘duty to manage’. Exemption from this requirement for training, only applies when it can be demonstrated that the working environment is free from all asbestos-containing materials (ACM’s.)

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires every employer to ensure that adequate information, instruction and training is given to their employees who are, or could be liable to be exposed to asbestos, or who supervise such employees. Even if you have no intention of removing asbestos, but work on buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000, asbestos could be present, awareness training is required.

In particular, it should be given to those workers in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades where it is foreseeable that ACMs may become exposed during their work. This course is suitable for those in the following indutries, but are not limited to: demolition workers, construction workers, general maintenance staff, electricians, plumbers, roofers, heating and ventilation engineers and other such professionals.

This requirement does not apply where the employer can demonstrate that work will only be carried out in or on premises free of ACMs.

Certification will be provided for those who have successfully passed the multiple choice examination at the end of the theory session. All delegates are required to attain a grade of at least 80%

Please note that this course requires that delegates consult safety notices and read and thoroughly understand the relevant legislation and guidance provided, English literacy and language comprehension are important requirements for anyone attending.

Successful delegates will receive a UKATA E-Certificate which will be valid for 1 year. The certification can then be validated using UKATA's online validation tool to ensure your delegates have legitimate certification.
